One in five people is neurodivergent. Not one in a hundred. Not a rare edge case. One in five. The person next to you on the train this morning. Your kid's best friend. Possibly you. Possibly your child, who you've been watching struggle in ways that break your heart and that no amount of tutoring, discipline, or early bedtimes seems to fix. And yet, we still live in a world that treats cognitive difference as a problem to be corrected rather than a perspective to be understood. We still have parents sitting in my office saying, I don't want my child labeled. We still have adults who have spent decades believing they are lazy, stupid, or broken, because no one ever told them that their brain simply runs on different software. Extraordinarily powerful software, as it turns out. Just not the kind the system was built for.
We still live in a world that treats cognitive difference as a problem to be corrected rather than a perspective to be understood.
We Keep Calling It a Disorder. What If It Never Was?
Despite the fact that awareness around neurodivergence has grown significantly in recent years (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, sensory processing differences, and more are now part of mainstream conversation), I still see the fear every single day in my work. A parent sits across from me, distressed, and says: "I don't want to get a diagnosis for my child. I don't want them to be labeled." I hear that. I genuinely do. That fear doesn't come from nowhere. It comes from decades of watching divergent thinkers be misunderstood, pathologized, and quietly pushed to the margins of classrooms and boardrooms. It comes from a world that has, for too long, treated different as deficient. But here's the truth I return to, over and over again: not examining your child's cognitive style doesn't protect them from anything. It just leaves them without a map.
It comes from decades of watching divergent thinkers be misunderstood, pathologized, and quietly pushed to the margins of classrooms and boardrooms. It comes from a world that has, for too long, treated different as deficient.
The Problem Isn’t the Brain. It’s the Box.
Approximately 15 to 20% of the global population is neurodivergent. That's one in five people. One in five people whose brains process, learn, create, and connect differently from what we've collectively decided is standard. Think about your last team meeting. Your child's classroom. Your family dinner table. The odds are extraordinary that someone in every single one of those rooms is navigating a world that was built without them fully in mind. And yet, the systems haven't caught up.
Schools are still largely structured around sitting still, linear processing, timed standardized tests, and compliance-based learning. Workplaces still reward a very specific type of focus, output, and communication. We keep designing for one cognitive style and then wondering why so many brilliant people are struggling.
Here's what the research actually tells us: a Harvard Business Review study found that cognitively diverse teams solve problems faster than cognitively homogeneous ones (Reynolds and Lewis, 2017). Not marginally faster. Significantly. Because when you bring together people who think differently, who see patterns others miss, who ask the questions no one else thought to ask, who make lateral leaps where others take straight lines, you get innovation that a room full of identical thinkers simply cannot produce.

The Ones Who Changed the World Didn't Think Like Everyone Else
We don't have to go far to find the evidence. Albert Einstein showed signs consistent with dyslexia and autism. Richard Branson has spoken openly about his dyslexia and the way it shaped how he built businesses. Nikola Tesla, whose contributions to electrical systems still power the world, showed traits we would today likely identify as neurodivergent. Steve Jobs, Da Vinci, Darwin, so many of the people we hold up as visionary thinkers, as the architects of human progress, did not move through the world in straight, conventional lines. Their divergence was not despite their genius. For many of them, it was intrinsic to it. And still, we build systems that would have failed them. That did fail many of them. That still fail millions of people every day who carry the same kind of electric, unconventional mind.

The Quiet Cost of Staying Unexamined
I want to be very clear about something, because I think it gets lost in the label conversation. I am not an advocate for diagnosis as classification. I do not believe in handing a child or an adult a category and saying, there, now you have a box. That is not what neuro-affirmative diagnosis looks like, and it is not the framework I work within. What I am an advocate for is self-knowledge. For understanding the specific, remarkable, sometimes maddening, ultimately beautiful way that your brain, or your child's brain, actually works.Because without that understanding, something quiet and deeply damaging happens. The child who can't sit still starts believing she is bad. The teenager who reads slowly starts believing he is stupid. The adult who loses track of time, who hyperfocuses on passion projects and can't seem to manage the mundane, who feels everything at a volume the rest of the room doesn't seem to hear, starts believing she is lazy. Unreliable. Too much. Not enough.
This is not a labeling problem. This is a shame problem.
And shame, left unexamined, does not motivate people to grow. It teaches them to hide. To mask. To spend enormous amounts of energy performing neurotypically while their actual gifts sit quietly in the dark and fade away. They start giving up on themselves. They slowly lose themselves.
What a Different World Could Look Like
What if we built schools where movement was part of learning? Where visual thinkers were taught visually, where storytellers were allowed to tell stories, where a child's pace was honored rather than ranked? What if workplaces had flexible structures: different environments for different tasks, asynchronous options for those who think best in silence, space for the kind of deep, intense focus that neurodivergent people often carry like a superpower? What if we stopped asking "what's wrong with this person?" and started asking "what does this person need to thrive?"
Here is something that often gets overlooked in this conversation: a world designed to honor all thinking styles doesn't just benefit neurodivergent people. It benefits everyone. Flexible systems create space for neurotypical people to breathe too, to work in ways that actually match how they function best, rather than how the org chart says they should. When we stop optimizing for a narrow definition of productivity and start designing for the full range of human cognition, we don't lose efficiency. We gain it.
What if we stopped asking "what's wrong with this person?" and started asking "what does this person need to thrive?"
From One Mind to Another
I work with artists, leaders, and people in recovery from systems, relational, educational, and professional, that made them feel like they didn't belong. And the thread I see running through almost every story is this: They were never broken. They were never disordered. They were just different. And different, in the wrong container, looks like dysfunction. If you are a parent holding your breath about a diagnosis, I see you. If you are an adult who has quietly wondered for years whether your brain works wrong, I see you too. The answer is not a label. The answer is a map: one that shows you where your mind naturally goes, what it naturally builds, and what kind of container it needs to come fully alive. The world is beginning to understand this. Slowly, imperfectly, but genuinely. And I believe we are moving, together, toward something that could hold all of us. All 100% of us.
